Abstract Virtual Private Networks have been ailed as a revolutionary development for the creation of network connections
without the need for long distance leased lines. Using a connection through the internet with communication encrypted remote users are able to become part of the their companys Local Area
Network with the overhead costs and need to maintain equipment carried by the carrier or internet service provider rather than the company. However, there are also some shortcomings. The
use of VPN also requires the use of an additional protocol to carry the messages and encrypt them. A common protocol is that of IPSec, this does aid security, but
it is also difficult to maintain and can be complex to administrators and lessen the potency of the security. If we look at the difficulties some of these may be
overcome with the use of SSL may be seen as offering increased efficient ease of use and potential security level. However, it is only of use for application that can
be web enabled so it is not a totally suitable replacement, but may be better for some uses. 1. Introduction VPNs or Virtual Private Networks are increasing in
