be provided cost efficiently utilising the public internet infrastructure. 2. Article Summary The development of the Virtual Private Network, or VPN. This is a network that makes use of the
internet as an infrastructure but is secure and leads onto private networks, hence the term virtual private network. This paper gives a good background to VPN, explaining what it and
why this is better for small to medium sized enterprises that would otherwise be unable to afford the cost of setting up wide area networks, which until recently were the
only alterative for a constant link, or bear the costs of remote access. After this teaser introduction which is a sales pitch for VPN there is attention paid to
the area many commercial readers will be interested in. For example, it is stated that the cost savings of using a VPN rather than leased lines can be between 20%
- 40-%. Compared to remote access the saving are quoted as being between 60^% - 80%. Examples are given where the longest payback periods was only five months and more
benefits, such as no geographical barriers, flexibility and scalability are all benefits. When the interest has been tweaked sufficiently there is the move onto the more technical aspects. This
is a fairly simply written paper and then looks at how VPNs operate, looking at the different types, using tunnelling. The two most popular forms, Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) and
the Point-to-Point Tunnelling Protocol (PPTP) are motioned with IPSec seen as being the most secure and recommended as being faster as well as for security reasons. The paper then
