several works of fiction, Ellisons Invisible Man, and Wrights Native Son, violence is that which seeks to cause irreparable damage and breed chaos. Violence and resistance are key elements and themes throughout both novels. It is apparent that the title character in Native Son is trouble. Regardless of the circumstance, Native Son tells the story of a young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. This book is divided into three distinct sections called Fear, Flight and Fear. Each employs violence to its own ends. The first section shows Bigger Thomas as the typical angry young black man in the 1930s Chicago slums. The whole novel is foreshadowed from the beginning when Bigger is wakened to the terrified screams of his mother and sister as they are attempting to dispose of a very aggressive rat. Symbolically, Bigger strikes at the rat and the rat strikes back, leaving a gash on his leg. Eventually, he manages to kill the rat with a skillet pan. "The rat squeaked and turned and ran in a narrow circle, looking for a place to hide...The rats belly pulsed with fear...and the rat emitted a long thin song of defiance, its black beady eyes glittering" (Wright, 10). The rat and Bigger are shown to be in similar circumstances, both only doing what they need to survive. Bigger certainly does not stop to wonder why the rat is fighting so violently, just as most of the whites Bigger comes into contact with do not understand him.
