the merger of Vincor International Inc. in Canada and Goundry Wines in Australia. Vincor, as Canadas largest wine company, was trying to expand its focus beyond nation wide to world
wide, it was thought a merger with Goundry would be the way to go. 1) Dominant economic characteristics of the international wine industry.
According to the original case study, wine-producing companies are identified as either "New World Producers" or "Old World Producers." New World producers are in the U.S., Australia, Chile
and Argentina, while the Old World producers are in France, Italy and Spain (Celly and Beamish, 2003). The top 10 wine exporters in the world accounted for more than 90%
of the value of the international wine trade - and of those top 10, half were in western Europe, and the other half were New World suppliers (Celly and Beamish,
2003). What makes this deal even more compelling is that Australia holds the top spot of the export list in terms of New World producers (Celly and Beamish, 2003).
Furthermore, the wine industry on a global basis looked pretty good at the time, with expectations that it would expand to 120
million cases by 2010 (Celly and Beamish, 2003). Most of the growth was anticipated to come from the United States, the UK, Australia and South Africa (Celly and Beamish, 2003).
