of happiness. In Randall Wallaces movie, We Were Soldiers, the two faces of the Vietnam story are shown. The first face is that of the die-hard patriot, whose resolutions and
firmly held convictions give way to pure nihilism. The other face is the brutal reality of war, and the fact that in the end the only thing that war brings
with it is death. Decades after the last of the United States military were pulled back from the shores of Vietnam, the scars still remain. Of all the wars which
had preceded it, Vietnam would forever leave legislators and citizens alike wondering if America should have been there in the first place. The movie is a fictionalized account of one
of the first significant battles in the Vietnam War, Landing Zone X-Ray in Vietnams Ia Drang valley. It is clear that the men in Gibsons platoon are very clear as
to what they are fighting for. They are fighting for each other, to keep each other alive. This is divorced from any other sort of political or ideological overtones. On
the battlefield, then, this movie shows how the average soldier in combat in Vietnam could have cared less about the politics behind the conflict. All that mattered was living and
coming home, and making sure ones buddies did the same. This movie does not use a lot of special effects so one is not distracted from the storylines which begin
to develop. A civilian reporter who is in Vietnam to cover the war finds himself covering the battle with this platoon. It is ostensibly his point of view that one
sees the actions unfold, though it is clear that Gibson is the protagonist. In this battle a large section of the regiment would die. Moore is the
