stuff that still makes the staunchest hearts grow soft. The tale has survived the centuries, one has to think, because its messages still hold true to the emotions and situations
which mankind still continue to face. Various versions of the tale have been offered throughout the ages. Zeferelli, Lurhmann have offered two of the more contrasting tales, while Shakespeares version
still tends to be the perennial favorite. Most believe that Shakespeare created the story of Romeo and Juliet, but most experts state that the tale of the star-crossed lovers was
told by minstrels in the streets long before Shakespeares time. Still, one has to credit the famous bard for organizing the tale in to a form that has lasted and
continue to inspire throughout the ages. Franco Zeferellis version is still one of the best versions existing on film today. It is perhaps the truest to Shakespeares setting and
characters. Zeferelli was the first to really use teenagers to portray Romeo and Juliet. Before this time the two characters of Romeo and Juliet were played by much older actors/actresses
because it was thought that it would be unseemly for teenagers to depict such sexual tension on film. But, this film was created in the late 1960s (1968 to be
exact) and the censorship had begun to relax. Other firsts included showing the two lovers naked on their wedding night. What one particularly loves about this version of Romeo and
Juliet is that one is totally immersed in this ages old tale. The cinematography, Italian setting, grand architectural elements, all combine to present the story as Shakespeare probably envisioned. It
