European Union. The main goal of MERCOSUR is to eliminate various obstacles to trade between member nations, which have included high tarrifs, income inequalities or even conflicting technical background (Klonsky
and Hanson, 2007). The main goal of the agreement, however, is to move toward economic integration of South America -- with the ultimate hope of being competitive on the global
stage when it comes to trade (Klonsky and Hanson, 2007). Current MERCOSUR members are Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay (Klonsky and Hanson, 2007). Venezuela is an associate member, with full
membership not a certain thing because of its philosophical differences with the remainder of the bloc (Klonsky and Hanson, 2007). There are
a few questions that arise, however, when it comes to Venezuelas membership in MERCOSUR. For one thing, what are the benefits and drawbacks to membership?
On the surface, the benefits seem to be pretty good -- Venezuela becomes allied with a powerful block of countries when it comes to trade and
economics. This opens up the world to Venezuela, through MERSOCUR member companies, meaning there could be more markets for Venezuelan goods. Also the ability of goods and services to flow
across "borderless" countries also makes sense, in theory. With tariffs and paperwork blocking trade many times, the dissolution of these barriers through an organization such as MERCOSUR means that a
product or service can move to market that much more quickly. But for Venezuela, in particular, there are some drawbacks, one of
