nations. But what are some of the benefits to this business -- and Venezuela -- as a result of MERCOSUR membership? What
adjustments will need to be made to a business as a result of MERCOSUR? For the sake of this paper, well assume
the business in question is a chemical one, perhaps one that is a supplier to the oil industry. The business exports chemicals to other nations as well, and likely will
depend on MERCOSUR to lower tariffs and increase trade protections to its South American neighbors. When Venezuela joined MERCOSUR in 2005, the
countrys president Hugo Chavez believed it would help strengthen regional agreements. More importantly, for Mr. Chavezs anti-American sentiments, it meant that membership could prevent a U.S.-sponsored accord for the Southern
Hemisphere (Bloomberg, 2005). At the time, Chavezs goal for joining the organization was to both promote his influence and acquire government debt (Bloomberg, 2005). It was the presidents attempt to
