A SLAVE GIRL: "When he told me that I was made for his use, made to obey his command in every thing; that I was nothing but a slave,
whose will must and should surrender to his, never before had my puny arm felt half so strong," states the protagonist in this first hand account by Harriet Jacobs(Jacobs 2000).
All of these literary devices, it can be said contribute to the overall soup that is a book, that mixture and blend of all the literary elements that serve to
illustrate the symbolism, the characters state of mind or to show a glaring irregularity. One of those irregularities, and a theme of the text, is the cruel way in which
black women were treated as opposed to the white women. She writes: "Such were the unusually fortunate circumstances of my early childhood. When I was six years old, my mother
died; and then, for the first time, I learned, by the talk around me, that I was a slave"(Jacobs 2000). In many ways, black women had to endure two types
of prejudice. They had the stigmatism of being slaves, and then, as if the issue of race werent bad enough, they had to deal with the prejudice that accompanied their
gender. In fact, according to what Ms. Jacobs writes, women were discriminated against by white and black men alike. Here, though she might not have known it, but showing what
a natural storytelling ability she had, Jacobs has set the stage for what the whole book will be about. The protagonist, Jacobs herself, has been taken from the home and
the people that she loved and distributed to her dead mistresses family members. This, then, will be as much a story about a young girl becoming a woman as it
