By - May, 2011 A new outpatient clinic, which is associated with the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical
Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, opened in Texas City in order to better serve the needs of veterans living in Galveston County. This Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) is the second
to open in the area, as there is also a new facility at Galveston, and both facilities provide "primary care and mental health services to veterans in the area" ("VA
opens," 2009). MEDVAMC Director Edgar L. Tucker observed that "These new clinics in Galveston County will greatly expand the VAs Capacity for outpatient care in southeast Texas" ("VA opens," 2009).
Veterans living in the area were offered the choice of remaining enrolled at the Houston VA or switching their primary care to either the Texas City or the Galveston
CBOCs; however, veterans receiving specialized care must continue to receive care at the Houston location ("VA opens," 2009). Originally opened on April 14, 2005, the Texas City CBOC recently reopened
on March 18, 2011 ("Texas City," 2011). This brings services "closer to where out Veterans live and greatly expands VA health care access south of Houston" ("Texas City," 2011).
