that her continued hardship was the result of the lowly position to which she was relegated in an oppressive society. Only people like Connies brother Luis seemed to make
it and only because he denied his Latin roots and attempted to Americanize himself as much as possible. As Connie would say, "Well, to get ahead you step on
people, like my brother Luis. You knuckle under to the big guys and you step on the people underneath" (Piercy 120). Connie Ramos is constantly being one of
these people being stepped on. When society becomes convinced she is insane, she is taken to Bellevue Hospital. While incarcerated in the mental institution, she is visited by
Luciente, a person of questionable gender from the futuristic society of 2137. She then begins to learn about the utopian society of Mattapoisett, and the many changes which were
enacted so that the world of the future could learn from the old worlds mistakes. Such is the premise of Marge Piercys novel, Woman on the Edge of Time.
When asked by an interviewer if the book was her definition of utopia, Piercy replied, "What I was doing was taking all my favorite ideas out of the various
movements for social change that were around and attempting to give them as concrete a form as possible so it would seem real" ("Marge Piercy: A Class Act" 1994). Grolier
