Dewey turned down a job at GE, but the headhunter convinced her to meet with company executives and she was hired on the spot ("GE Siren," 1999). She
wanted to be part of the e-commerce push and said it would be huge (1999). She was right. Not only that but CEO Jack Welch made e-commerce the firms number
one priority (1999). GE has relied on e-commerce in order to grow their earnings to double digits. Also, the companys strong diversification and development of niche products has helped a
great deal to strengthen its bottom line. One thing that should be a focus is the replacement of the EDI network with a Trading Process Network. In fact, the
company had made an announcement stating that it would move all of its corporate procurement functions to the Internet by 2000 (Chronister, 1997). That announcement was made in 1997
and the company has come a long way since. It has been suggested that not only did that announcement signify a change for the company, but also that it
would make a tremendous impact on electronic commerce by adding about $1 billion (1997, p.52) per year to online commerce. GE originated Trading Process Network (TPN) which is
its online procurement service, something that began for internal use but has since been marketed (Chronister, 1997). TPN is a portfolio web-based product that allows people to conduct business through
