design a city of the future. It is a team project and it is multidisciplinary involving language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and visual arts. This is a year-long project
and one that requires numerous tasks and activities. To begin, students will use concept-mapping or mind-mapping tools. The teacher can instruct students in mind/concept-mapping or students may search this
on the Internet. One good source is found at http://users.edte.utwente.nl/lanzing/cm_home.htm, which explains what it is and provides a graphic illustration. The next thing students need to do is
research and gather information. This can be accomplished by accessing the Internet. Students will use search engines, such as Google, and access Online libraries, like Gale and e-library, and other
sources. Students would develop a set of questions to research, such as what kind of transportation would people use, how would their homes be powered, how would the city be
ecologically and environmentally friendly. Students might even use SimCity, a software application that allows the user to design their own cities. Research regarding feasibility would be important. One Web site
that discusses future cities is "Future by Design" at http://www.futurebydesign.org/citythink.html. This site discusses the benefits of circular cities. These sources would also provide students with an introduction to architecture.
The research would involve students in science, math, visual arts and language arts. Small groups would also be working together thereby teaching students social skills. Scientific research would address
different sources of energy, ecological balance and environmental protection. Students will need to use mathematics to calculate differences and benefits. They would learn, for example, how much power can be
produced by solar or wind technology and how that would compare to oil that is presently used to create energy for buildings. Students would be expected to compare the amount
