Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 10 page paper begins with a general discussion of technology in the classroom and the controversy about such use in mathematics. The rest of the paper reports the results of numerous research studies, identifying the process and the school and the outcomes. Several suggestions are made about software programs for teaching ESL/ELL students. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

per two or three students in each classroom. Second, technology changes at such rapid speeds, schools would never have state-of-the art technology for students. Third, most teachers are not trained
well enough to make the best use of any kind of todays technology. Research has been sporadic in terms of the effect of computers and other technology in the
classroom. One study that seemed to provide some valid conclusions was the Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT) project (Page, 2002). This project showed that students in computer-enriched classrooms did indeed
increase their performance and students had a more positive attitude towards school, they had higher self-esteem and their writing improved dramatically (Page, 2002). After ten years of the project, "schools
reported that increased access to classroom technologies encouraged more student collaboration, more creative projects, higher student confidence, and more accurate student communications" (Page, 2002, p. 389). A meta-analysis by Burns
and Bowman showed that computer-assisted instruction resulted in significant increases in math achievement of primary age students (Page, 2002). Another large study that involved five counties in New York concluded:
increasing the technology available to students encourages, facilitates, and supports student achievement-at the elementary level, the most profound effects were found in the area of mathematics, where sixth-grade math
scores on the states Comprehensive Assessment Report were strongly related to increases in technological use (Page, 2002, p. 389). Other studies have found that using computers in the classroom
is very beneficial to students with special needs (Page, 2002). "Special needs" includes students at risk, language minority, low socio-economic, educationally disadvantages, learning disabled and low achieving (Page, 2002). The
use of technology in mathematics continues to be a topic of debate and controversy (Guerrero, Walker and Dugdale, 2004). On one side are those who are enthusiastic about the possibilities
