needed extra tutoring. Today, computers and other technology is being used to improve the social and emotional development of both preschoolers and children who have delays in these developmental
skills. It is not without controversy, though. Parents sometimes voice concerns about having their preschool-age children use computers fearing it may make their children passive instead of active learners (Chatel,
2005). The state of the society, however, strongly suggests that yes, we should use computers as early as preschool because many of these young children are using computers and even
the Internet at home (Chatel, 2005). And, research has shown these children have developed both personal, social and cognitive skills (Chatel, 2005). The best advice is for preschool (and other)
teachers visit a reputable Web site for suggestion for programs that will accomplish certain goals. Heft and Swaminathan (2002) conducted a study to determine how computers affected the social
behaviors of children attending a preschool. They considered social interactions such as taking turns, resolving conflicts and problem solving (Heft and Swaminathan, 2002). Initially, it was thought that computers might
isolate the children from each other but since few classrooms have one computer per child, the opposite has happened. Children cluster together around a computer, they work with partners or
they work in very small groups (Heft and Swaminathan, 2002). One activity that requires social skills is to make up stories. Children must interact with each other to write the
