undertaken with the intention of taking action as a result of the findings of the study" (Brighton and Moon, 2007, p. 23). Action research provides a means for teachers and
other school personnel to find solutions to their instructional problems without having to wait for others to address the issues that concern them (Brighton and Moon, 2007). This concept is
empowering, but it necessarily entails teachers understanding the intricacies of research and how to conduct studies that are empirically sound. This is the topic addressed by Stanovich and Stanovich, (2003)
in their informative article, which is designed as a guide to teachers concerning the intricacies of scientific research, how it is conducted, and why empirically proven results should be used
as a guide to the classroom practices of all teachers. Stanovich and Stanovich (2003) begin their article by placing scientifically proven data within the context of information on instructional
