weeks of the second trimester. Discussion Mifepristone is sold under the name Mifeprex; the website maintained by Danco Laboratories, which manufactures the drug, says this about its usage: "Mifeprex is
used to end an early pregnancy. It blocks a hormone needed for your pregnancy to continue. It is not approved for ending later pregnancies. Early pregnancy means it is 49
days (7 weeks) or less since your last menstrual period began" (Mifeprex, 2005). (We must assume that the writer of the website content means that the drug must be used
early in the pregnancy; the term "early pregnancy" makes no sense). The guidelines are quite clear and very specific: Mifeprex cannot be used later than 7 weeks into the pregnancy.
Since the second trimester starts at week 13, Mifeprex should not be used. That warning is repeated several times; under the heading "Who should not take Mifeprex?" it states: "Some
women should not take Mifeprex. Do not take it if: It has been more than 49 days (7 weeks) since your last menstrual period began" (Mifeprex, 2005). There seems to
be no leeway here whatsoever; a woman who wants to end a pregnancy in the second trimester will have to use another method. We might also note that there have
been some complications with this drug, including several deaths. These however seem to be attributable to the fact that there is a second follow-up medication that must be taken
after the first dosage of Mifeprex, and that in these cases, the women who died apparently didnt take the medication correctly. The proper procedure is as follows: on
Day 1, the woman takes three tablets of Mifeprex at her doctors office; she returns on Day 3, and if she is still pregnant, takes two Misoprostol tablets (Mifeprex, 2005).
