The way the problems are seen and dealt with will have a great impact on the way a problem is solved and the level of success that is achieved. In this paper the use of a fictitious problem is to be used to demonstrate the use of the PrOACT system proposed by Hammond (et al, 1999). The paper will start with some background to the case and the outlining of the problem before moving onto the objectives, looking at the alternatives and considering the consequences and the trade offs. In this paper we will use the case of a health centre and the need for a new system to maintain patent records, however the same approach may be applied to a number of applications, such as any company where there are manual customer records or where there is increased pressure to cut costs or increase efficiency on record keeping. 2.
