newspapers are used as part of instruction, students perform at a higher level (Grimshaw, 2004). The authors own study of showed significant differences in performance between a group of third-graders
who read the newspaper and a group that did not read the newspaper (Grimshaw, 2004). The study group students increased their reading fluency more and they made four fewer errors
in word recognition (Grimshaw, 2004). One of the side benefits of using the newspaper is that students are reading about current events (Hopkins, 2005). This is true even with the
style and/or entertainment sections of the paper. This is very beneficial because many schools do not teach current events as a subject or focus these days. The newspaper covers a
vast array of topics and subject areas while it helps students become better citizens (Hopkins, 2005). Perhaps students will gain an appreciation for the printed word on paper as
opposed to television broadcasts and the Internet. The newspaper inherently improves vocabulary, comprehension, higher level thinking skills and problem solving (Hopkins, 2005). Reading the newspaper articles can also open dialog
between people. That would include dialog with peers, with parents and with teachers (Hopkins, 2005). And, research has shown that students who read newspapers generally score higher on major tests
(Hopkins, 2005). Research also indicates that students enjoy reading the newspapers (Hopkins, 2005). If they develop this habit in school, they may be more likely to continue reading print news
media as they grow up. Newspapers are very inexpensive to use. The teacher does not need the same newspaper for each student, in fact, the teacher can separate the newspaper
