In the early 1990s, Howard Gardner reintroduced what he described as his theory of Multiple Intelligences, which is based on the belief that individuals demonstrate different capacities and relate to information in different ways. In conjunction with Gardners perspective, theorists have argued that understanding occurs in relationship to these different capacities, and that assessing understanding means relating to these capacities as a determining factor in shaping cognitive experiences. As a result, Gardners view of Multiple Intelligences has been utilized to promote greater response to learner needs in the educational model and has supported learner-based educational outcomes and curriculum design. The correlation, then, between this kind of theoretical perspective and changes in teaching strategies for children who are homebound demonstrates the flexibility in the educational culture that can be derived from applying multiple intelligences. Consider just some of the many changes in the culture and in the theories of education and best practices regarding both the content and the process of education that have emerged since the 1970s: cooperative learning; collaborative learning; constructivism; multiple intelligences; mainstreaming; inclusion; gifted and talented education; multicultural education; facilitation; to mention just a few.
