counselling and helping the placement of those with disabilities into employment. The theory we will use is that of Maslow. His work looked at what it was that motivated man
to work, and although the correctness of his work is sometimes questioned in terms of psychology, this is still a common concept in workplace motivation theory (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 1996).
Maslow saw man as a social creature and developed theories on motivation. Maslows hierarchy of needs is divided into higher and lower orders,
starting with psychological needs such as security. His needs were defined as the physical, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization levels (Shoura et al, 1999).
Maslow stated that man started at the bottom and moved up, and sometimes down the hierarchy. Lower order needs needed to be satisfied before a man could move
higher towards the ultimate goal of the highest level; self actualisation. Once a need was satisfied it would no longer be a motivator, however the self-actuating level would be self-perpetuating.
Maslows theory was based on the premise that man has the need to grow and develop. This theory is accepted by many as true of the majority of employees, however
it can be argued it will not be true of all (Baron, 1987). This recognises that man works for many reasons
not just money. If money were the sole motivator there would be few, if any people in the lower paying professions such as nursing. Part of the reason for this
