(Williams 2002, PG) when architecture was all about elaborate design and ornamentation. Whereas ceilings are usually obstructed with lighting details and other necessities, floors and paths are large expanses
that are quite ideal for the ornamentation and design that was so popular hundreds of years ago. Perfected by the Italians, paving stones were oftentimes laid in intricate patterns to
reflect pleasing designs that would lead the eyes. Rather than having large unadorned areas craftsmen of the era would show their skill and handiwork in setting stones in patterns
such as the intricate basketweave or interlocking type patterns that we are beginning to see again today. Popular designs were geometric patterns and checkerboards, oftentimes using different colored stonework to
further elaborate on the ornamentation of the surface structure. PAVEMENT ARCHITECTURE TODAY Popular today are the interlocking paving stones used in driveways, walkways and patios. The same designs
and patterns that were popular long ago are again popular today. Landscape architects use paving stones when they want to give a finished and beautiful look to the landscape.
The versatile usefulness of paving stones can be seen in the fact that they can be used in formal gardens, rustic log homes, casual spaces and virtually any
format can be utilized to give the type look to fit the area. The pattern that is used can oftentimes dictate whether the look is formal or casual or somewhere
