were" (Macdonald). At that moment, the man who was sitting across from Sprecher attempted unsuccessfully to catch her assailant. Afterwards, the man simply smiled at Sprecher, who then
pondered, "I wonder what hes been through today" (Macdonald). This incident inspired Sprechers 2002 film (co-written with her sister Karen) Thirteen Conversations about One Thing, and is featured in
its final scene. The one thing, to which the film refers, is happiness, but the conversations among the major characters invariably address the problems associated with life changes. One
bar conversation takes place between two strangers, an overzealous prosecutor named Troy (Matthew McConaughey) and cynical insurance adjuster named Gene (Alan Arkin). Troy is celebrating his latest victory while
Gene is nursing self-pity. The two debate the concept of happiness with Gene lamenting that it was a curse, which he asserted he had learned because, "I knew a
happy man once." Gene was referring to Mickey Wheeler, who believed winning $2 million in the lottery would be his ticket to happiness. However, as Mickey would soon
discover, his newfound wealth brought unwelcome changes and obstacles he could have never foreseen such as financial frauds and lawsuits, including one from his mother-in-law who believed that her prayers
for her son-in-law to win the lottery entitled her to $1 million. Having fallen over several of lifes obstacles himself, Gene became bitter and convinced that happiness was little
more than an illusion. Rather than embracing change, Gene seems to fear it, preferring to hide his true humanity behind a veneer of cynicism. Gene dismisses Troys
