a platform where users create their own accounts, construct profiles, post messages and photos, and perhaps most importantly, are able to look at others posts and respond to them. There are several levels of privacy, so that some information is readily available and other information is available only to specific people. Facebook began on college campuses, then expanded to include high school students, and is now available to anyone with an email address; its biggest innovation to date is allowing anyone to develop software to add to the site (McGirt). This has led to some extremely useful programs being developed, as well as ones that have people shaking their heads, such as the one that allows "Facebookers," as theyre called, to throw virtual sheep at one another (McGirt). Apparently, in Facebooking, anything goes. Defining friendship: Because Facebook is an online social network, it encourages users to define friendship in terms of those who have the ability to access the Internet. Within the cyberspace world of Facebook, friends are the people who find one another because they share the same tastes or are interested in the same things. Groups form with names that range from the expected, such as "Campus Republicans" to the "prurient" (We Need to Have Sex in Widener Before We Graduate)" to downright weird (Hass). Some administrators and professors are delighted with Facebook, especially on campuses like New York University, where the school doesnt have an "enclosed campus" (Hass). Says Anita Farrington-Brathwaite, assistance dean for freshmen at New York University, "it really gives people a way to find each other and connect" (Hass). Lawrence H. Summers, president of Harvard University, "gave kudos to Facebook in the opening lines of his address to freshmen in September, saying he had browsing the site to get to know everyone" (Hass). ...
