The first thing to do is determine what is meant by typical, specific and hypothetical examples. The meanings are really self-evident. A typical example is a general illustration that fits
the majority of people observed; a specific example is one person or thing that is considered specifically, and a hypothetical example is something we make up. With that in mind,
lets consider the idea that we can determine at least something about a person by what they drive. The idea isnt new, and it has a certain amount of appeal
because it seems sound psychologically. However, were not concerned here with whether or not it can be proven that we can form an accurate picture of someone by seeing what
he drives, but how we can use examples in the discussion. Lets start with a typical example. This means that were going to take as an example a behavior that
we have seen repeated in many cases, so that it is a "typical" observation. Here, we might say something like this: "Motorcyclists are definite risk takers. Theyre all typical of
that type of personality: they love the feeling of danger and speed that comes with riding a bike. They also tend to be individualists, because riding a motorcycle isnt easy.
It takes a certain type of person to handle a bike." Here we are using what we know about riding motorcycles (that they can go very fast and yet offer
little protection to the rider, making them dangerous in general and often fatal in accidents; and that they take a certain skill level to handle) and extrapolating that to cover
