giving control to students (Tassell, 2004). Too many teachers also believe that giving any amount of autonomy or decision-making power to students will lead to the teacher losing all control
in their classroom (Tassell, 2004). This belief pervades the system despite the enormous amount of research on cooperative learning over the past twenty years - when using cooperative learning, a
great deal of autonomy and choice is given to students. Dunlap and Liso comment: "Children tend to be more cooperative, more engaged, and better behaved when they are involved with
activities, materials, and individuals that they enjoy" (2004). Choice theory is credited to Bill Glasser although Glasser first offered his theory as control theory but not in terms of
someone else having control (Tassell, 2004). Glasser said that "control is necessary for the psychological balance in ones life. It is a common trait of human beings to want control
in their lives" (Tassell, 2004). Glasser identified four basic needs of all humans: "love, control, freedom, and fun" (Tassell, 2004). These four lead to a "healthy psychological balance" (Tassell, 2004;
