of these areas is that of smoking. There is no disagreement that smoking harms health, not only of those who smoke, but also those around the smokers, with passive smokers
being exposed to the same risk, without any consent to that exposure. The costs of the long term effects are also well known, treatment for cancer , respiratory disease and
a multitude of associated ailments, placing a strain on health costs. Therefore, the need to reduce smoking levels is one that makes moral, social and economical sense. The issue is
how this can be done so that it is effective, both in health prevention and well as in economical terms, saving more than it costs in the long term.
A range of models have been developed to help determine the best way to approach health promotion model. The Beattie model looks at this from two dimensions, the model of
intervention and the focus of the intervention, these cross in the middle and form a cross, with each quarter indicating a different approach and as such giving four models for
health promotion. This is valuable as a tool by which to look at existing practices or as utilisation in a planning scenario. The model reflects different approaches, for example,
the causes of illness may need to be focused on an individual or on a collective. As such the intervention may focus on either individuals or on communalities. Smoking is
a difficult topic, as it is a personal habit, but also the result of peer pressure for adolescents, it is also a social problem. However the decision to give up
