scientific breakthroughs that have occurred throughout the century. Longer life expectancy, better quality of life and the very ability to save lives is the basis upon which animal research
is considered invaluable to human existence. "Virtually every major medical advance in this century has been dependent upon animal research and it remains critical to unlocking the cure for
many diseases still claiming the lives of millions, including AIDS, cancer, Alzheimers, sickle cell anemia, and multiple sclerosis" (Michigan Society for Medical Research, no date). 2. Logically speaking, the
use of animals in medical experimentation removes the torture inherent to the only viable alternative: human beings. Vivisection, the practice of experimenting on animals, began as the result of
a religious ban against the use of human corpses for medical study. When the ban was lifted, it was too late for the sacrificial animal, because vivisection was already
considered a mainstay within the medical world, thereby relieving human models of the potential for undue torture. Had it not been for animals replacing humans in medical experimentation, there
is not telling the extent to which the discovery process would have been weakened due to moral issues and preventing the breakthrough of such critical components as antibiotics, blood
transfusions, dialysis, organ transplantation, vaccinations, chemotherapy, bypass surgery and joint replacement (Trull, 2002, p. PG). CONS 1. What of the rights of the animal who gives his life
