Although entertainers have created a market for hypnotizing people on stage--making them bark like a dog or squawk like a chicken--the use of such techniques are actually used for legitimate
purposes. Hypnotism is sometimes used as a medical tool and it can also be utilized as a way to reduce stress, or change unwanted behaviors such as cigarette smoking or
overeating. While many are familiar with ads placed by hypnotists that promise they can help people to lose weight or stop smoking, for example, few are acquainted with the
more important uses of hypnotism. The technique is sometimes used to treat surgical patients and also by the police to jog the memories of key witnesses. While hypnosis is
rather odd, and sometimes questioned by professionals as legitimate, it is nevertheless utilized in a variety of ways. However, Cowles (1998) has found that professionals are often dissatisfied with the
lack of scientific explanation for what happens during the trance like state. This exacerbates doubt concerning any particular hypnotic experience (1998). In other words, there is no sure way of
determining whether or not a subject is truly in a hypnotic trance. While there may be no definitive proof that hypnosis has validity in medical practice, there is a
slew of anecdotal evidence to support its use. In fact, if one were to look at psychological and medical journals, one would see that there are indeed potential
clinical benefits of hypnosis; there is evidence in different clinical pathologies that hypnosis has been used successfully (Cowles, 1998). While there are skeptics, there are professionals utilizing hypnosis, or hypnotherapy
