totalitarian regimes was the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The leader of the Bolsheviks, Vladimir Ilich Ulyanow, better known as Vladimir "Lenin," was a master at using terror to control
the Russian peasantry. He, therefore, instituted public policies that utilized terror in order to sol!idify the political position of his party. By succeeding at this, Lenin made his own interpretation
of Marxism, Russias reality for almost the remainder of the century. According to Lenins writing, the morality of the new order originated from the "facts and needs of the
class struggle of the proletariat" (p. 711). The "needs" of the working class included the destruction of the old society of landowners and capitalists (p. 711). Lenin maintained that the
morality of the new order was "wholly subordinated to the interest of the proletariat" (p. 711). Therefore, using this "new" morality, Lenin was able to rationalize the most
inhumane and brutal policies as moral because they fit in to his plans for the establishment of communism. Violence and terror were, therefore, inherent to the theory and
practice of communism by Lenin between 1917 and 1923 in the Soviet Union (Fitzpatrick, 1982). In other words, the atrocities of the Stalinist era were not a! unique episode in
Soviet history, but rather part of a continuing cycle of terror. This regime did not, in fact, dismantle the mechanisms of state that were known under the tsar, but
merely reengineered them to fit promote a new elite class within Russian society?the members of the Communist Party. In doing so, the new leaders utilized terror and coercion in much
