outline for how to develop a course: define the subject, explain it, and summarize it. This paper considers how a faculty that develops and maintains courses could be trained to
use usability principles to design, test and monitor their courses. Discussion First of all, this paper is very general because there is no specific course given as a hypothetical subject.
That is, its not possible to state that by lesson two, the student will have learned how to perform differential calculus calculations. Instead, its only possible to state in general
how courses can be designed using usability principles. Researching the terms "usability principles" shows that they are referred to in the context of computer learning and little else. According to
Nielsen, usability is "a quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces are to use" (2003). The term can also refer to "methods for improving ease-of-use during the design process"
(Nielsen, 2003). Usability is defined by "five quality components": learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors and satisfaction (Nielsen, 2003). Learnability means that the system is it easy to learn, particularly when it
is used for the first time (Nielsen, 2003). Second, once new users have learned the system, can they perform tasks quickly? (Nielsen, 2003). Third, if users have been off the
system for a while, can they re-learn it quickly and easily? (Nielsen, 2003). Fourth, do users make a lot of errors, how bad are they, and can they recover from
them? (Nielsen, 2003). Finally, is it nice to use the system? (Nielsen, 2003). If we consider these points in the context of a training course, then we might want
to consider each of these five points as guidelines. First, the course should be easy to understand so that its easy to learn. Obviously a training course will be presenting
