tiny in comparison to its neighbors, has advanced its economy since the 1970s. Now that its neighbors have moved into the world trade market, Uruguay is taking an economic
hit. In addition, its birth rate continues to decrease, and migration is a severe problem. Although Uruguays free trade initiatives set the world on fire, an aging work
force, it is finding itself fighting against its own initiatives in order to retain the quality of life it has enjoyed for decades.
Demographics In order to have a basic understanding of how economic changes affect the quality of life in Uruguay, students should be
able to discern how the demographic changes in Uruguay have affected economic changes. Some of the additional demographic changes affecting Uruguays economy are constant migration from the pastoral industries
to the urban industries. The younger workers are taking over the jobs of the older workers, who are retiring early, which is placing a larger burden on the younger
workforce. These all affect the quality of life for the younger people, especially when life expectancy has vastly improved over the past forty years due to improved sanitation and
medical systems. Students should also be able to draw correlations between mortality rates, employment rates, and the changes surrounding the GATT treaty of 1994-1996 ("Economic Research").
