enveloped a violent existence fraught with gang warfare, garbage dump havens and a corrupt police force. The book is compiled of essays, giving the reader little slices of life. Yet, these essays depict tragic stories, by most standards. Although the people are portrayed as being strong to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, the entire book is composed of rather desperate tales. There seems to be poverty and violence in each essay and a sense of unfairness shines through. The unfairness may be unimportant as life is often unfair in many ways, but Urreas portrayal of a people in such dire consequences will touch the soul of any human being. The reader is drawn into the culture, perhaps unaware of just how touched they might be after reading the pages of a simple book on Tijuana. As if the book did not give enough of a flavor of life on the border, the end chapter called "Christmas Story" gives statistics to demonstrate just how bad off Tijuana is. The book includes stories pertaining to holidays, as so close to the United States, the people picked up some American celebrations. Tragically, the Christmas statistics displays events that had occurred during one particular holiday season referenced. Urrea matter of factly reports that fourteen people died of exposure, eight of whom were babies and expired on Christmas Eve. While the garbage men were used to finding babies in the dumpsters, an unusual find of a hand in a mayonnaise jar had the men perplexed. They thought someone was trying to send a message but did not know how to interpret it. These stories are hard hitting when contrasted with the Christmas holiday. While some in Tijuana are reportedly lucky enough to have Christmas trees, not to mention a roof over their heads, most do not. ...
