Francisco is one of the few regions that is both a city and a county. It is comprised of 46.87 square miles. The population in 2010 was 805,235, which reflected
a small increase of 3.7 percent since the 2000 census so it is growing although very slowly compared to 10 percent growth in the state. Persons over the age of
65 account for 13.6 percent of the population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). The four largest groups are Whites, 48.5 percent; Asians, 33.3 percent; and Hispanic/Latino, 15.1 percent (U.S. Census
Bureau, 2012). In 2010, 11.9 percent of the population were living below the poverty line. The average per capita income in 2010 was $45,478. The median average income was $71,304,
a significant difference (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). The unemployment rate was about 8.3 percent in February 2012, compared to a national rate of 8.1 (Monster, 2012). Age adjusted mortality
rates per 100,000 by ethnicity in San Francisco are reported as: African-American, 1,302; Asian/Pacific Islander, 446; Latino, 535; White, 724 (Healthy Communities Institute, 2012). These data were based on the
latest data available at the time of calculation. A recent report states that suicides increased to 10.4 per 100,000 (Champion Report, 2011). The elderly are at risk because of their
