environments (Naish and Hallam, 2007). These infections are attributed to bacteria. While it is a waste product by definition, containing salts and other wastes, urine does not typically house bacteria. When bacteria penetrate the bodys bladder or kidney, however, they reproduce. The result is a urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections that occur because of bladder infection are referred to as cystitis and are the least concerning from a physiological standpoint. When this infection centers in the kidney, however, it is referred to as pyelonephritis and can be relatively serious. Both cystitis and pyelonephritic can affect young and old, male and female (Naish and Hallam, 2007). The causative factors in urinary tract infections can vary significantly.
