is as high as 50 percent among women and 20 percent among men. This makes it an important condition to address. The typical treatment is medication (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010).
Urologists specialize in this condition although it is probably treated most often by primary care physicians. The Guidelines were collated and coordinated by a number of urologists and pharmacologists
for the European Association of Urology (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010). The Guidelines identify a number of drugs for treating different types of incontinence, i.e., urgency, stress, and mixed incontinence (National
Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010). Guidelines were established by the panel through a meta-analysis of evidence-based studies published in the literature (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010). Studies include in the analysis had
to meet specific criteria as to the strength of the research study. Recommendations were then determined through expert consensus, i.e., a consensus development conference was held (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010).
Recommendations for drugs was also based on evidence concerning the effectiveness of each drug (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010). The last two updates to the Guidelines were accomplished in a different
way. Beginning in 2008, the panel conducted a comprehensive literature review. Prior to that time, guidelines were established based on the knowledge, expertise and opinions of group members. The problem
was that the method was based on the assumption that all the relevant information would be obtained by these experts (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010). The new approach is to
review empirical, evidence-based research studies. Criteria to include any study included the use of randomized controlled trials (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010). The panel also reviewed meta-analyses that had included at
least three years worth of empirical research studies. The panel also reviewed information from other reliable sources that provided high-level evidence, guidelines as developed by other expert groups on the
