Levels of Development Urie Bronfenbrenner discussed human development from an ecological point of view and in terms of levels. He proposed that the structure of the environment is comprised of four ecological systems that are essential in a persons development. * Microsystem is a small system that is closest to the person and that has direct contact with the person. This reflects an individuals immediate surroundings, such as the home, which would include the family and close friends (Paquette and Ryan, 2007). As we grow and mature, there is more than one microsystem that has an impact on us. We have family and home but we also have classroom and peers, work and co-workers, circle of close friends, neighborhood where we live, church, and so on (Emory University, 2010). It is anyplace where we have direct contact with others. * Mesosystem is the level in the environment that connects different structures that are present in the microsystem. (Paquette and Ryan, 2007). Kruger (2006) commented that some authors refer to the mesosystem as a system of many Microsystems. It is also about how the relations between microsystems. For example, how do experiences with ones family relate to experiences at school (Emory University, 2010). As an example, a child who has bad experiences at home may have problems at school.
