is an issue and this high school film that includes a romance between the rich white girl and the boy Latino boy is a major theme. Kirsten Dunst plays the
wild child of a California official and falls for a guy from the other side of the tracks. It is a classic theme, but there is much one can say
about the setting that is not classic at all. The film provides a backdrop on which to analyze race relations--not of black and white but of Latino and
white--in Californias Los Angeles. The films Latino protagonist is Carlos Nunez who is stereotypically poor. In fact, the stereotype given to Carlos could have been given to any inner city
kid of color, but in fact, it is given to a Latino and this is significant. Above and beyond that point, he is able to get out of the ghetto
through hard work and a talent in football. The premise that a Latino boy from East L.A. can only get out of his poor area through sports is again a
stereotype, just as it is in black neighborhoods. Yet, it is important to examine the stereotype. How true is it? Does it indicate a real trend or did producers want
to make the unlikely romance more intense by denoting the male protagonist as someone who many would both feel sorry for and root for? Does it tend to meld the
city of feeling with the city of fact? It is not very likely that this situation would occur and also, one has to draw on the stereotype, which is in
some way quite mythical. There have not been an inordinate amount of football stars to come from Los Angeles. There is O.J. Simpson. Also, Larry Brown went to Los Angeles
