urban sprawl. H so many political bodies concerned about the urban sprawl it seems quite a logical solution. The following paper examines urban sprawl and historic preservation from many different
perspectives. The focus of the paper is to look at the information and see how plausible historic preservation of old neighborhoods can be in deterring urban sprawl. Urban
Sprawl and Historic Preservation In examining this topic we first turn to discussing several different articles that address various problems or issues related to historic preservation of neighborhoods. In one
article, not a recent article, but an article dated back in 1993, we note that in Newport, KY, there were renovation loans and low rates. "Newport, Ky., a small urban
community of 18,876, is working on a project that will serve as a model for other urban cities that also have an aged housing stock" (American City & County, 1993;
36). This program is not merely about refurbishing the neighborhoods that have historic structures, but a program dedicated to "recycling the citys physical and human resources by involving local businesses
and agencies to create the rebirth of Newports quality of life, says Laura Long, economic development director for the city of Newport" (American City & County, 1993; 36). This particular
program also serves to illustrate how important and successful historic preservation can be on many levels, one of which is economic. The article indicates that in the past the
