Also existent in such neighborhoods is an underlying tension about race and ethnicity. These are things that are well known to urban dwellers but rather foreign to suburbanites or rural
residents. While it is true that these things are just known to those who live in these neighborhoods, there is always the danger that such statements are stereotypes and while
stereotypes do have some truth, there does need to be some support for such theses. In examining one article about urban life, one can see that to some extent,
it provides support for the statements, but on the other hand, it defies some of the propositions. In a Wall Street Journal article entitled Chicago Hope by Jonathan Eig, a
portrait of Chicago emanates. Images of Chicago linger in the minds of people due to media portrayals as well as when they surface on television dramas like ER and Chicago
Hope. On ER for example, gang members are frequently rushed to the emergency room. Also through the years, the death of a black surgeons nephew was shown, as well
as the interference of gang culture in respect to a young interns disabled brother. Gangs are a part of the landscape and the people merely accept poverty, gangs and an
extensive drug subculture as part of modern urban life. Yet, does the popular media portray the circumstances accurately? In the Eig (2003) article, the author begins with a look at
the housing projects and equates them with the concept of "poor urban planning" (p.A1). He talks about the fact that the housing development is coming down at a time when
