this will often result in a mishmash of developments, some of which will be logical, bit with expansions and addition the development can become very mixed, with layers of styles
seeming different areas. If we look at urban development in London then arguable we can go back to the Roman era, when London was established in the swamp area that
surrounded the Thames. However in terms of urban development this may be an interesting time from which there was a beginning that saw a rapid rise during the middle ages,
especially wit the wealth brought t the city during the Time of Elizabeth I, but very little of this remains today. The London of this time had narrow streets,
sewerage ran down the streets and there was a great deal of squalor, many roadways were muddy and the houses were close together. These building would have been unlikely to
survive until today, but in many cases where there is an urban pattern the same road pr area patterns will remain unless there is some purposeful change. The reason for
this was the Great Fire of London in 1666, starting a Pudding Lane which destroyed most of the city and allowed fore the rebuilding of this in a more uniform
style with a great deal of aid from Sir Christopher Wrenn and his pattern for the streets which saw concentric circles moving outwards with straight roads emanating outwards like pints
from a star. This can be compared directly with other areas such as Paris where there was the purposeful development wit the use of a grid system. This is
a structure that can still be seen today, but in terms of urban development it is also a long time ago and allowed the pattern to develop whereby there was
