This 12 page paper examines and compares two regeneration projects, on at the former docklands in Gateshead, near Newcastle, where the development has been spurred on by the commission of The Angel of the North and the opening of the Baltic and other cultural developments that have served to attract commercial investors to stimulate economic growth. This is contrasted to Paris where a large areas has been set aside for the development of a business park and shops. The paper looks at both projects, considers the way they are being undertaken a d looks at the similarities and differences. The bibliography cites 10 sources.

there was also economic activity and the need for investment to maintain that economic activity, many of todays surviving cities and towns started their economic lives as port towns and
hubs of business. However, as development ion technology and transport have take place over the last century the importance of the older
docks and ports has reduced gradually, seeing these areas become economically less important as trade moved to new areas, leaving behind the populations that had relied on trade as a
source of income directly or indirectly. The areas would also see a lack of investment and the status of the areas would fall as economic power was lost. Many former
docklands and ports have become wastelands, with social problem associated with a lack of investment and poverty, high unemployment and crime rates, poor health and other social problems as well
as a general decline in the standard of living and economic activity. The regeneration of these areas can reverse may of the
problems and create a new economic activity that can also help rectify many of the social problem, but the regeneration projects need to take into account not only the need
for economic activity, but the interaction with the local communities and the local cultures and identity. It is only when these aspects
are incorporated into the soul of any regeneration project that is can succeed (Miles, 2005). By looking at two areas that have undergone regeneration or urban development, both former dock
or port areas, the projects can be compared. Here we will consider Gateshead in Newcastle Upon Tyne near the river Tyne and docklands area of Paris.
