This paper discusses the book with regard to a readers impressions of immigrant life, Sinclairs meaning when he used "the jungle" for the title, and social welfare policies in the United States. Discussion Impressions of immigrant life as described by Sinclair: The thing that any reader will notice immediately is that the book is relentlessly dark and unpleasant. The lives of the characters are ones of unremitting drudgery and hard work; they cannot get ahead; they live in squalor; they are always in danger of losing their jobs; Ona has to give herself to her boss to keep from being fired-the litany of suffering is so overwhelming it becomes numbing. Sinclair was obviously writing to make a point, that bosses exploit workers shamelessly, but it almost becomes overkill, because nothing ever goes right for these people. Consider the protagonist, a Lithuanian immigrant named Jurgis Rudkus. Over the course of the novel, he marries his girlfriend Ona, also a Lithuanian, in a joyous and colorful opening scene in which the music and feasting go on long into the night (Sinclair). However, reality sets in immediately as the young couple discovers they owe the saloonkeeper over $100 - a small fortune at the time - for the party. They are starting their marriage already deeply in debt. Jurgis and his family are swindled on the house they buy, forcing everyone in the family to go to work; Jurgiss father finds a job so difficult that it kills him; Ona has to go back to work only seven days after giving birth; Jurgis cant stand the pressure and abandons his family; Ona is forced to sleep with her boss; she dies giving birth to their second child (Sinclair).
