If the individual cannot see a benefit from the change they are unlikely to support it. In the case of the Upstage Theater Company it may be argued that it is both personal and professional motivation on the part of the artistic director, Mark Buck, which had driven forward the plan to move for a season of tragedy and serious works in a theatre that had traditionally shown a high level of comedy. There are a number of persuasive arguments for the change including the increased support that the theatre would get from the business community, which is needed due to the continued of loss making seasons and realization that theatre is unlikely to loose the existing patrons. However, change is difficult to accept and the board members have different vested interests that they wish to protect, the conflict is arising due to the perceived clashes between the different ingrowths and the final resolution may be seen to result from the ability to find an alignment between the different interests of the board members. The problem does not only occur as a result of the change that is being proposed, it may also be argued to be the result of the way in which it is proposed. The artistic director is taking on a very autocratic style of leadership.
