true depths of Hell for anyone who is not saved by Jesus Christ. It is a place wherein infants who have not been baptized go and a place where the most treacherous of individuals go. Throughout this infamous story there are many levels, circles, in hell and they are ultimately divided into the Upper circles of Hell and the Lower circles of Hell. The following paper examines and defines the two levels. Upper Hell Upper Hell consists of five different circles. The first of these circles is where infants not baptized and individuals who did not know God have been sent. As one author notes, it is essentially limbo which is "Reserved for the souls of the just people who never knew Christ" (The Physical Structure of Inferno). Dante describes the position of this first circle and its people stating, "This miserable measure the wretched souls maintain of those who lived without infamy and without praise...The heavens chased them out in order to be not less beautiful, nor doth the depth of Hell receive them, because the damned would have some glory from them" (Dante Canto III). The next level, or circle, consists of those who led a lustful life in one way or another. The main character is a woman who had an affair with her brother-in-law. This circle is followed by a level of gluttony. The fourth "The Avaricious and Prodigals...These souls, mostly clerics, go opposite direction, bumping into each other as they push big rocks" (The Physical Structure of Inferno). The final circle of the upper levels of Hell is inhabited by souls considered to be sullen and wrathful. The souls themselves are within a river, the Styx, and this river is all around a city called Dis (The Physical Structure of Inferno). ...
