For many citizens it is too much information and as such possesses too many possibilities. And, to add to that confusion, many individuals grow up wanting for nothing and suffering
no serious dilemmas in their lives. Some of these people may well wish they felt something, wish they stood for something, or wish they maintained some conviction that kept them
going. It is much like dreaming that one could be born with the knowledge of what they would be when they grew up. The truth, however, is that most of
us do not know what we want to be. We do not necessarily stand for just one cause, or for one belief. This reality is clearly reflected in John Updikes
short story "A&P." In the following paper we present an examination of this story and relate it to a hypothetical individual who feels the same, or experiences the same situation
as the primary character in Updikes story. Standing for Something It appears as though the individual within Updikes story is a teenager or perhaps a young man who
has just entered into the adult world, working to support himself. He is likely from a fairly stable family, both socially and economically speaking. He works at a mini-mart and
has no drive in his life. This individual is not unlike Paul, another young man who has just left the safety of his home life and finds himself in a
position where he must learn what it is to be a man. Paul has no strong convictions about much of anything. Sure, like any young man, he has dreams and
hopes that those dreams come true. But, for now he finds that the real world is something of a let down as he comes to work every morning, pays bills,
