short story in relationship to getting its message across, but rather a subtle and realistic tale. In this story the young man, who is seemingly quite bored with his job,
sees young girls come into the store in their bathing suits. They essentially get in trouble for their apparel and are kicked out of the store. The narrator stands up
to his boss for the girls and quits his job, walking out of the store in the end and realizing "how hard the world was going to be to me
hereafter" (Updike). This also illustrates a main theme in that it demonstrates how people will experience events wherein, if they step outside their normal bounds they then may find a
new path in life that is not always simple or easy (Updike). The main character in the story is Sammy. He is
a young man, as mentioned, who is seemingly bored with his job. He is also a young man who seems a bit angry or bitter as well, something evidenced in
his wording regarding one of his customers: "Shes one of these cash-register-watchers, a witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows, and I know it made her
day to trip me up" (Updike). This is a line that also suggests he may be judgmental as well. But, in essence, he is very much symbolic of many young
people who are defining the world around them, learning to understand other people, and seeking out their own identity and voice. This is ultimately who Sammy is and he finds
his voice in the end and begins to see his identity as he steps outside his normal bounds. The conflict of the
