another. The young narrators in the stories are individuals who are confronted with the unfair realities in the world, and the consequences of those realities. In Updikes story we are presented with a much less powerful illustration of injustice, for injustice is only an excuse for Sammys actions, than we are in Bambaras, but the point is there in each story. In the following paper we present an examination of each story, individually, as it involves the narrator and their lesson. The paper then presents a comparison and contrast. The A & P In this story we see Sammy, a young worker at the A & P. This is obviously a job that is needed somewhat by himself and his family, as is indicated towards the end of the story when we hear his boss say his parents will be upset for they need this. But, Sammy is also a young man that seems ready to be fed up with a mundane job with mundane people. In this respect the girls who enter the story only serve as a vehicle for him to escape this world of the cows, so to speak. Now, it should be understood that many argue he is standing up to injustice in the world as it involves the young girls. As one author states, "At first glance, Sammy, the first-person narrator of John Updikes A & P, would seem to present us with a simple and plausible explanation as to why he quits his job at the grocery store mentioned in the title: he is standing up for the girls that his boss, Lengel, has insulted. He even tries to sell us on this explanation by mentioning how the girls embarrassment at the hands of the manager makes him feel scrunchy inside ...
