Discussion The story is simple: the cashier at the A&P, Sammy, watches as three young women in bathing suits come into the store one summer afternoon. The male employees are falling all over themselves watching the girls until the manager comes out and embarrasses the young women by telling them theyre improperly dressed and not to come back again without covering their shoulders. He keeps telling them that the A&P is not the beach. Sammy is embarrassed for them, irritated by the managers attitude and impulsively quits his job on the spot, hoping that the girls will think of him as some knight in shining armor. When he gets outside, of course, theyre gone. "Situational irony" is usually defined as the difference between what we expect to happen and what actually does happen. Here, it occurs in several places, but the two that stand out are when the manager asks the girls to cover up, not leave. If he were as incensed as he pretends to be hed have thrown them out, but instead he tells them to make sure theyre dressed decently the next time they come in (Updike). The reader cant help but think that the manager is really ore concerned with making the sale than chastising them; after all, they are completely covered, even if they are pushing the limits The second ironical situation is Sammys resignation. He quits on impulse, hoping to impress the girls, only to find out that theyre long gone by the time he gets outside. Since the manager makes a point of reminding him that Sammy owes his job to the fact that the manager knows his parents, that implies that Sammy has quit the only job he can find in this small town-for nothing.
