IT is now ubiquitous and no longer sufficient to create an advantage, it remains true that the organizations who utilize IT in the most efficient and innovative fashion will have
the capacity to carve out a major advantage in most markets. This is the goal for Riordan Manufacturing. Riordan is already at the top of their game in the field
of plastic injection molding, with offices located all across the United States, and a new facility in Hangzhou, China as well. While the company remains a Fortune 1000 Enterprise, the
executives at Riordan are never content to rest on their laurels. Instead, they have undertaken a campaign to take advantage of recent trends in the outsourcing of IT and IS
functions to foreign countries such as India or the Dominican Republic through the use of application service providers (ASPs). Before they make such a move, however, they desire to compile
a report to determine what efficiencies and savings stand to be gained by doing so. Riordan Manufacturing was founded after Dr. Riordan inadvertently developed several high tensile strength polymers in
his work as a professor of chemistry, and then successfully sought patents for those polymers. Efforts to capitalize on those patents led to the establishment of Riordan Plastics, Inc. in
1991. At first, the company did no manufacturing, but only sought to license its innovative patents to other manufacturers. After several successful years using this model, Riordan was able to
acquire venture capital and used it to purchase a manufacturing plant in Pontiac, MI, thereby bringing the manufacturing aspect of the industry in-house, and changing the name of the organization
to Riordan Manufacturing. Since then, the company has expanded to Georgia, and most recently in 2000, to China, where manufacturing of plastic fans can be done extremely efficiently. This move
